It was very hectic, challenging and anxiety provoking to find something “safe” to eat for those with food sensitivities. The food is pretty pricey and the portions and much smaller than any other restaurant on the island.
I did get a tummy ache after my meal, I go the mushrooms(for the table), miso soup & heart of palms pasta. My mom got the crab,(which she didn’t particularly like.. saying it was under flavored and over cooked).
This was without a doubt one of the most enjoyable dining experiences I have ever had. The food was outstanding, the staff were very warm and friendly, and dinner was full of lots of “oh my gosh, you have to try my dish!” All around the table. Judging by the group of eight that I went with, I don’t think you can go wrong with your order. Everything was made to the highest quality and everyone absolutely loved their meal.
We celebrated our anniversary dinner here as part of our Hawaiian vacation.
The restaurant is part of the Mauna Lani resort. They have valet parking (no self parking the night we went). The resort is very nice; almost intimidatingly awesome. We had reservations, but we had to wait to book until only a couple of weeks ahead of time.
The location is unbeatable. It fronts the beach directly and they opened up seating so even the indoor seating was basically on the beach. We went at sundown and the sunset was perfect.
Service was warm and prompt. I was a little shell-shocked at the prices (my steak was over 100 dollars). We had planned on going lighter and saving for dessert, but they talked us into an extra appetizer and side dish. The food was great but not life-changing. We had the foie-gras potstickers (good), the bread (great), two steaks (great) and the garlic fried rice (fine).
At the end, they gave us a dessert to celebrate our anniversary, complete with a little 'Happy Anniversary' chocolate.
Overall, great experience, but pricey.
We did the chef's tasting and it was good, but honestly not spectacular. The sunset atmosphere was outstanding. The food all felt very fresh, but there was nothing particularly wowing about it to be honest. Most of it was good, but nothing mind blowing. Everything felt safe, right down the middle, not overly different or flavorful. There were a couple of courses that were exceptions (like the wagyu add-on), but majority were more in the "ok" realm (a negative exception was dessert which was bad to the point of being inedible). And that's fine, not every restaurant has to be spectacular! However, for a bill that was nearly $600 after tip, I frankly expect spectacular. We ended up at Merriman's the following night which lacks the atmosphere, but was a vastly superior chef's tasting for less than half the cost.
it was the best meal we had on the island ! Our waiter Chris was so welcoming. we had the tasting menu and every plate was flavorful, fresh and creative! the prices are high but well worth it !
Had my girlfriend’s birthday dinner (late arrival, 8pm-ish) and a second dinner at sunset a few days later here. 5-stars on all fronts, from the delicious food to the wonderful hospitality and the super knowledgeable sommelier (and corresponding sake and wine list). They also make a consistently great old fashioned cocktail. We got the best seat in the house watching the beautiful sunset.
Had an amazing dinner here during our stay at the resort. Went with the chefs 6 course tasting menu. Staff very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and the ingredients. All the dishes were full of flavour. Seafood was fresh, cooked perfectly and many layers of flavours. Overall the best meal we had on the island. Would highly recommend. Only regret is we didn’t have get a chance to go back for a second meal during our stay but will definitely be back.
If you are looking for a romantic dinner spot with a view, look no further! This was absolutely the most incredible sunset view of our trip! We were staying at the Fairmont orchid nearby and were able to get dinner reservations here one night. We did the chef’s six course dinner and while it was pricey, it was such a fun experience and a way to try new dishes. I would definitely recommend eating here during your time on the big island!!
